Fight Depression with an Alkaline Diet

On most of our post we talk about the relationship  between our diet and our physical health, but did you know it is also closely related to your mental health? Being a happy, stable person doesn't mean everything around you is a fairy tale, it means your brain is functioning in a healthy way. And just as it happens with all other organs in our body, our brain's function is closely related to the way we feed it. Eating Alkaline Foods rich in live nutrients feeds our brains and this results in healthier happier attitudes and moods. You can Fight Depression with an Alkaline Diet As Kristin Kalning writes for MSNBC: What we eat is bumming us out, new book says 'The Happiness Diet' explores the link between food and mood

Processed foods are stripped of vital nutrients and mood boosters, such as magnesium and vitamin B12, experts say.
We know that the typical American diet — filled with processed food and added sugar — is making us fat. But it’s also making us depressed, according “The Happiness Diet,” a new book that links food to feelings.
“Your brain is made of food, and the right foods are the foundation of good mental health,” said Drew Ramsey, M.D., who co-authored “The Happiness Diet” with veteran health editor, Tyler Graham. “You can't feel your best if you starve the brain.” Undernourished brains, the authors say, go hand-in-hand with overweight bodies — and they back up these claims with voluminous amounts of data. Thanks to big agriculture and the food industry, our grocery stores are full of food loaded down with added sugar, refined carbohydrates and vegetable fats, like corn oil. Our refrigerators contain factory-farmed meat and dairy products. These foods, the authors say, are stripped of vital nutrients, such as magnesium and vitamin B12, and essential fats, such as conjugated linoleic acid. You’ll find these natural mood-boosters in whole grains and leafy greens, but also in grass-fed beef and full-fat dairy, which dieters tend to avoid for fear of gaining weight. Substantial weight loss leaves many formerly fat people seeking plastic surgery to repair  under-eye bags, slack jaws and so many wrinkles that it led one online patient to comment: “I looked like everything had melted." “Focusing on getting skinny by eating a low-fat, low-calorie diet, fails for most people,” said Ramsey, a clinical psychiatrist at Columbia University. “The Happiness Diet” nixes calorie counting in favor of eating healthy fats, like olive oil, complex carbohydrates like vegetables and sustainably raised meat. Dieters will feel more satisfied, and, by extension, lose weight, said Ramsey. “I do believe (that) much of the food available to us is nutrient-poor, and that most Americans eat a largely unhealthful diet and need to get back to eating real food,” wrote Elisa Zied, R.D., in an e-mail. But calories do matter, and portions consumed matters, too. “That’s really the bottom line when it comes to sustainable weight loss,” she said. Exercise is also key to weight loss — something the authors don’t address in “The Happiness Diet.” Though exercise is Ramsey’s “top prescription for anxiety” when working with patients, he and Graham point out that if you’re eating the typical American diet, you don’t feel much like exercising. Fill your plate with kale and wild-caught salmon and you’re bound to feel better — and ready to tackle the treadmill. OK, so whole foods make you feel better, and should make you skinnier. But don’t they cost a whole lot more? “The biggest myth out there is that eating right is expensive,” said Ramsey. If you're really into this kind of thing, you could skip buying cuts of meat at the grocery store; instead, gather some like-minded buddies to buy a whole animal from a local farmer. He also suggests joining a CSA (community-supported agriculture) program for a weekly supply of produce, which is usually less expensive than what you’d get at the market. And freeze, freeze, freeze — everything from fish to fruit to butter. Spending money on good food is worth it, said Graham, who pointed out that 100 years ago, people spent much more on food than they do now. “Your brain is made out of food,” he said. "What's more important, having 200 cable channels or feeding your brain the nutrients it needs?"

But this is not because of life has become sadder than it used to be, or because jay has become harder to find. What we eat is directly related to the way we feel on a regular basis. An Alkaline Diet promotes cellular nutrition in your brain, allowing it to maintain happier more stable moods. Give it a try.

Our previous article about the importance of Nutrition in pre conception and pregnancy had a great acceptation. There is so much to be said about healthy pregnancy and its relationship to what we eat, and so little said already. Both mom and dad should prepare their bodies before conceiving a baby to ensure health through and after pregnancy. An Alkaline Diet can have a big positive impact in the outcome of you Pregnancy

Diet has a lot to do with birth of babies Couples need to have plenty of salads, while men should have more cereals and less meat and processed food.   London: Would-be parents can almost double their chances of conceiving by improving their diet, according to new research.
Couples should eat plenty of salads, preferably with olive oil, while men need to eat more cereals and less meat and processed foods. Those that do may increase their fertility by up to 40 per cent, according to the findings of the research. In a study at Erasmus University, the Netherlands, 160 couples were quizzed about their diets and the women monitored as they went through assisted reproduction process. Researchers found those who ate a Mediterranean diet, including vegetable oils, fish, pulses and vegetables, but low intakes of sugary or salty snacks and processed foods, substantially increased the probability of pregnancy. Vegetable oils are rich in linoleic acid and linked to hormones which are important for initiating the menstrual cycle. In the second study, reported in the journal Fertility And Sterility, researchers looked at the food and lifestyle of 250 would-be fathers involved in IVF. Results showed sperm concentration went down with increasing weight and alcohol consumption, but was improved by cereal consumption. http://gulfnews.com/news/world/other-world/diet-has-a-lot-to-do-with-birth-of-babies-1.949111

Whether you are Pregnant, or planning to become, this information is for you. Getting our body ready to conceive a new little person is key to assuring that new baby's health during and after pregnancy. Maintaining in our body a healthy pH is essential, both for your own health, and for the outcome of your pregnancy, and the health of your baby. When the pH in our body is too acidic, cervical mucous becomes acidic as well. And this may lead to a hostile environment that won't allow proper implantation. Eating alkaline foods is beneficiary for everybody, but an alkaline diet for pregnant woman offers the added value of protecting both her health and her coming baby's health during pregnancy and in the future. To maintain a healthy Alkaline balance in your body make sure you consume plenty of raw fruits and vegetables. 70 to 80% of your diet should be made up of Alkalizing foods. Drink enough water, and stay away from extremely acidifying foods. Time Specials points out the importance of an Alkaline Diet in the reproductive process.

"7. A Healthy Diet During Pregnancy Cuts Birth Defects

By BONNIE ROCHMAN Wednesday, Dec. 07, 2011
There's nothing like having a baby on board to make a woman change her lifestyle. In October, pregnant women got extra motivation: a study reported that chowing down on fruits, veggies and whole grains reduces their babies' risk of having neural tube defects (NTDs) such as spina bifida or a cleft lip. The Stanford University study was among the first to link diet to birth defects. Researchers looked at the diets of 6,147 moms of babies without birth defects and 3,411 moms of babies born between 1997 and 2005 with NTDs or oral-facial clefts, observing how closely each adhered to two measures of diet quality: the Mediterranean diet and the U.S. Department of Agriculture food pyramid. Both diets emphasize healthy eating that incorporates various food groups, but the food pyramid stresses the importance of specific nutrients. They learned that women who ate healthiest — munching lots of fruits, vegetables and grains and lower amounts of saturated fats and sweets — were up to 50% less likely than women who ate low-quality diets to have a baby with anencephaly, a serious birth defect in which the brain doesn't fully form. The better-eating women were also up to 20% less likely to give birth to an infant with spina bifida and up to 30% less likely to have a baby with a cleft lip or cleft palate, according to the study, which was published in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine. Folic-acid intake is emphasized as a way to prevent up to 40% of NTDs, but the findings were consistent regardless of whether a woman took prenatal supplements containing the B vitamin. "It's not to say that's not important, but we found the quality of diet matters," says Suzan Carmichael, lead author of the study and an associate professor in the pediatrics department at Stanford."

Pregnant women, and women looking to become pregnant should be smart about the way they eat. An Alkaline Diet is ideal for everybody, but specifically for women going through this stage in their lives. They need whole food nutrition from fruits and vegetables to feed their bodies the live nutrients they need to make up for their increasing demands. It’s important to eat foods that are high in fiber. Raw fruits and vegetables provide phytonutrients that feed us at a cellular level. Complex carbohydrates, are a good source of energy and nutrition. And drinking enough water optimizes cellular functioning and balances our pH.

Soft Drinks are Extremely Acidic

Photo gallery with 1 photo.

Soft drinks seem to be a part of our life from er very young ages. We see soft drinks in parties, with meals, at work, even in schools, but have you stopped to think about what these soft drinks do to your health? In our fight to maintain an Alkaline pH in our Body, it is important to identify those extremely Acid Forming Foods in our diet. The reason why so many people suffer from acidosis is the way we eat. Our diet is too high in Acid Forming Foods, and far too low in Alkaline Foods. The main sources of acidity in our diet are animal products, processed foods, and sweets. Under those sweets, I'd like to put the spot light on soft drinks, carbonated drinks, and artificial sweeteners, which are big threats to our health. Both regular sodas, and diet sodas are extremely acidic, this is because the carbon dioxide that makes them effervescent reacts to form carbonic acid, and also because the enormous amounts of sugar in these soft drinks. Artificial sweeteners used in diet sodas and other diet foods are not only highly acidic, but are also toxic for our bodies. Remember the pH scale ranks from 0 to 14, where 7 is neutral. Anything over 7 is considered Alkaline, and anything under that is consider Acidic. The pH of our blood should be slightly Alkaline for optimal health (between 7.35 and 7.45). The pH of carbonated drinks ranks between 2.5 and 4.2.

"Diet not right: Toxic cola

By Sharmila Dhal, Senior Reporter Don't be taken in by sugar-free labels - some artificial sweeteners are a serious risk to your health, says expert   Dubai: People going in for certain diet sodas and sugar-free foods could well be poisoning themselves, warns a health expert.
"Many diet sodas and diabetic foods like sugar-free cookies, jams and gum contain artificial sweeteners like aspartame or amino sweets which are proven toxins," said Dr Robin Tauzin, a nutritionist physician in Abu Dhabi. Speaking to XPRESS on the sidelines of the MEVeg Conference in Dubai this week, Dr Tauzin said there is a huge misconception that all diet and sugar-free options of foods and beverages available in the market are safe. "People tend to read only the front of the labels which talk about the product being a diet or sugar-free option. What they don't pay attention to are the ingredients detailed on the back." Health risks Aspartame has known neurological health risks, she said, pointing to several controversies surrounding the artificial sweetener since its approval by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). While there have been many claims and counter-claims about associated risks like multiple sclerosis, systemic lupus, blindness, seizures, even birth defects, some studies in the US have also linked it with cancer. "In trying to avoid the high sugar content of regular options, people don't realise the dangers of consuming artificial sweeteners. In addition, both regular and diet sodas contain phosphoric acid which is bad for the teeth and bones." Many fat-free foods are a farce as the sugar content in them in "sky-high", she said, adding that labels can be misleading in terms of servings as well. "Only if the ingredients ascertain that there is less than 0.5 grams of transfat or sugar per serving can a product qualify as fat-free or sugar-free."" http://gulfnews.com/news/gulf/uae/general/diet-not-right-toxic-cola-1.946921
Carbonated drinks are not only extremely corrosive to your teeth enamel, they are also a big contributor to blood acidification in our society. When our blood pH is acidic, we are more vulnerable to disease and infection, ranking from frequent cold symptoms, to acid reflux, all the way to arthritis, diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

Weight Loss With Alkaline Diet

Photo gallery with 1 photo.

This is not a hype diet, but rather a lifestyle concept. Weight loss with alkaline diet is possible mainly because alkaline foods respond to what our body is made to eat, and so the body reacts to them in a positive way. An Acid Diet causes Acid built up in our body. In fact sometimes the acid load is so high that your body starts saving up fat to buffer their effect, and protect itself. So the reason why we start gaining weight is in many cases our body's natural tool of self defense against the foods we are feeding it. "The pH Miracle for Weight Loss" by Dr. Robert O. Young teaches us how all this works, and how we can control our weight by changing the way we eat. An Alkaline Diet responds to your body's needs, and allows you to reach that weight you want, while at the same time helping you gain energy, feel better, and stay healthy. Eating an alkaline diet allows us to reach that healthy pH balance that will keep us from getting sick, from aging faster, and from gaining weight. http://youtu.be/2p3iIf0_aOA Whatever your weigh goals are, Weight Loss With Alkaline Diet may be the fastest most sustainable way to reach them. And let me tell you, alkaline foods are the healthiest way to deal with any weight problems, because they provide us with real nutrition while allowing us to get rid of that excess fat. So this is really the best combination of benefits any diet or weight loss program can offer, isn't it?

Alkaline Foods, the Language of Nature

Photo gallery with 1 photo.

This is an article I had written a couple of months ago, and I would like to share with you too. Eating alkaline foods is such an easy and effective way of staying healthy, slowing down aging, and preventing disease!

Lack of Communication
As much as we humans want to believe he have evolved so far ahead of our fellow mammals, the truth is our bodies still speak a pretty primitive language. A language similar to the one spoken by the bodies of all other mammals out there, those that are alive today, and those that lived in the past. Now the big problem is, with our modern style of life, we have started to speak a different language from the one our bodies can understand. We speak in terms of fast food and TV dinners, while our body speaks in terms of Enzymes and Live Nutrients. We think of stress as having a type A personality, our body understands stress as a fight of flight situation. We speak in terms of sedentary lifestyle, our body understands time of famine.
So just as it happens in any other relationship, when there is a lack of communication, when there is no understanding of one another, things start to fall apart, and trouble starts to develop. That makes for a good explanation of why today, when medical science is at it’s peak, when medical advances climb to levels unimagined in the past, we are having more cancer, more heart disease, more diabetes and obesity problems than ever before. More deaths caused by Preventable Disease, than ever in human history. Our bodies and us are speaking two different languages. When we feed our body fragmented nutrients, enriched flours, refined sugars, processed foods, it doesn’t know what to do with them. It cannot read them, hence, it cannot absorb any real nutrition from them. To function properly, our bodies need Live Enzymes, that are found in the kind of food that comes from nature. When food is exposed to extreme temperatures, and to complex industrial processes, those enzymes die. Our body also needs Whole Nutrients (non-fragmented) , vitamins and minerals in their natural form. Phytonutrients that it can understand, absorb and benefit from. Again, this are only found in mother nature’s factory, not in processed foods. 70% of our daily diet should be made up of, raw fruits, vegetables, nuts and whole grain, in order to feed our body what it needs. It should be a diet rich in alkaline foods.  So in today’s society, our food choices are one of the main ways in which we are turning our relationship with our body into a dysfunctional, conflict relationship. And the thing here is, that when our body doesn't get the Enzymes it needs to function, from the food we feed it, it starts stealing them from itself. It takes Enzymes form certain organs, to make others work, unbalancing it's system, and opening the door for decay and disease. But it doesn’t stop there, on top of not feeding it right, we are sending it misleading signals all the time. Our primitive thinking body, understands stress as a couple of second, maybe minutes, of a life treating situation. Run or be eaten, kill or starve. At these times, the body understands that things have changed for the worse, and it needs to respond to it. In order to survive these situations, the body takes some extreme measures, it diverts blood from less vital to more vital organs, it increases the heart rate and the blood pressure, it increases the respiratory rate to get more oxygen, it breaks down glycogen stores in liver and muscle to get more glucose, it forms more glucose from non carbohydrate substances. Used correctly, stress is a great tool of survival, wild animals use it all the time. But when instead of it being a couple of minutes, we turn it into a lifestyle, into a constant through several hours every day, what are we doing with our body? Our conflict relationship is now turning into an abuse relationship. Similarly, when we live sedentary or depressed lives, we are sending our bodies the wrong message. Animals in nature hibernate, and go sedentary, in low provision seasons, at times when they will face extended periods without food, times of famine. To respond to that, our body’s survival reaction is to stock up for the season. So, regardless of how much food you eat, it stocks as much as possible for later, and it saves it in the form of fat. It dumps the immune system, to save some energy, It melts off the muscle, and lets the joints decay. Your whole body as a system starts to decay. So if I may offer some free counseling to help save your relationship, it will be for you to learn to communicate with your body. Learn it’s language, and speak it fluently every day. Feed it what it understands, and talk to it in the right terms. Positive feelings and optimistic attitudes, together with frequent exercise and plenty of live alkaline foods, are the best signals we can send to our body to tell it that everything is well, that it doesn’t need to shut down it’s metabolic processes, or save food for later, because there is abundance and safety outside. It is the best way to tell it we want to be friends, and we want this relationship to continue, and to be a good one, for many many years to come.
To your Health,
