Obesity, the World’s Biggest Food Problem

I wonder if the companies who share the responsibility for this obesity epidemic feel any kind of regret, or if their directors can sleep at night. The social responsibility of many of the big fishes in the food industry is virtually inexistent. They care about their bottom line and the price of their shares, but don't stop to realize the harm they make to society with the things they sell as food. The following article compares the obesity problem to that of hunger. It is great to see that the efforts to end hunger in suffering countries have shown positive results. It is now time for the industrialized nations to look at the big, and growing problem they have. In fact, if you ask me, obesity is a type of hunger in itself. How, you ask? Well people are being fed empty calories, their bodies are starving for nutrition, and need to keep eating in an effort to find those nutrients they so desperately need. I think, if we start eating real food, the problem should start to resolve itself.

A new analysis of global health data shows that the years of life lost from obesity outnumber those lost by hunger. Data from the World Health Organization’s Global Burden of Disease Study 2010 was unveiled yesterday and will be published in The Lancet. It reveals that obesity rates have increased 82 percent worldwide over the past two decades. It’s now a problem in all countries except for those in sub-Saharan Africa. Obesity and its associated complications produce health burdens higher than those caused by hunger, CNN reported. The data does, however, point to impressive progress against malnutrition and infectious diseases, especially in children. “Kids who used to die from infectious disease are now doing extremely well with immunization,” Ali Mokdad, co-author of the study and professor of global health the University of Washington, told CNN.
